It really does make a difference
If someone had told me that changing the shape of a glass would really make a difference in the wine...I would have scoffed. Oh, sure, it does. Hah. Riiight.
I'm a convert.
I don't drink California Chards. Never liked them, found them too oakey, too harsh, too...ick. Years of trying them occassionally, only to have my opinions reaffirmed. I never realized that my wine glasses made it worse.
A sample CA chardonnay in my standard house-wine glass (a couple-a-bucks a stem cheapos from Target) is harsh, oily, with a bitter, un-fruitlike finish. In these admittedly odd-shaped Chardonnay glasses...the same wine is smooth, slightly oaked, and with a fruity finish. The nose and finish were completely different.
I seriously didn't believe it was the same wine. We tried with a couple other CA and new-world chardonnays, ranging from a 10-buck bottle of Australian chard to an expensive California bottle. Same results (with varying degrees of...
